Award winning, large-scale costumes for the 2005 Lord Mayors Parade in London.

Costume Design

Claire has worked as a freelance costume designer since 2004, collaborating with filmmakers, dancers, photographers, sculptors, choreographers, musicians and artistic directors. She uses pattern cutting, screen-printing and CAD (Computer Aided Design) combined with metal work, mold-making, casting and other media, where appropriate. Claire’s work develops through research, drawing, samples and consultation, in order to realise designs that are sensitive to the aesthetic of each client.

Motionhouse Dance Theatre
Clients include Motionhouse Dance Theatre, an award winning and critically acclaimed Dance Theatre Company, who were voted the nation’s favourite dance company at the 2006 National Dance Awards; Claire has worked with Motionhouse since 2004 to design costumes for Scattered, Run, Chaser, Driven and Perfect. Described by the Guardian newspaper as “A ferociously energetic performance style with a slick and glossy assault on contemporary values…”.

Incandescence Production Company
Since 2005 Claire has worked as the costume designer for Incandescence Production Company; their clients have included Christian Dior, the BBC, Virgin, L’Oreal, Jaguar and The Cannes Film Festival. Fusing circus, theatre, opera, contemporary and classical dance, they have been described in the press as ‘an enchanting show that will mesmerise audiences…’ Claire’s costume designs for Incandescence have toured both nationally and internationally, from London and Manchester to Singapore, Dubai and China. These costumes are intricate and flamboyant, including corsets and crinolines for opera singers, beautifully detailed headdresses; leotards and gauntlets for aerialists and flowing, jewel-embellished dresses for dancers. Recent CAD and hand-drawn costume designs were approved by the BBC as part of a bid by Incandescence to produce a show celebrating the 60th anniversary of the BBC’s World Service in June 2009.

Cornwall Gardens for the Lord Mayors Parade
A commission by Cornwall Gardens and Gendall Design led to the design and creation of six award winning large-scale costumes for the 2005 Lord Mayors Parade in London. The intricate and sculptural costumes were based on flowers. They have been exhibited at: The Eden Project, Trebah, Trevarno and Trelowarren Gardens, The Hidden Art Cornwall Design Fair and The Cornwall Design Forum Exhibition 2006, in which they were voted winner of best overall design for the year. Other projects include designing for Attik Dance based in the Barbican Theatre, Plymouth; Cornish based C-Scape and The Works, Dance Theatre Cornwall.
